Whole-Home Surge Protection in OKC.
Oklahoma storms. One nearby lightning strike. A power outage that comes back wrong. Any of it can fry your HVAC, refrigerator, electronics, smart devices, and EV charger in a single moment. Whole-home Type 2 surge protection at your panel stops it at the source, for every circuit in your house.
Oklahoma + modern electronics = a vulnerability most homeowners don't see.
Lightning doesn’t have to strike YOUR home to fry your equipment: a surge anywhere on the grid travels straight through your power lines into your house. If any of these sound familiar, you need whole-home protection.
Oklahoma sees serious storm activity
Oklahoma sits in one of the highest lightning-strike density regions in the country. Severe storms, tornado-belt thunderstorms, and frequent grid disruptions all create surge events that travel into your home through the power lines.
Your home has more sensitive electronics than ever
HVAC with electronic controls. Smart appliances. LED lighting. Smart thermostats and security. EV charger. Garage door openers with circuit boards. Each is more surge-sensitive than the simple equipment in homes 20 years ago.
Power strips don't protect everything
Your TV’s surge strip protects the TV. It doesn’t protect your HVAC system, refrigerator, dishwasher, water heater, or any hardwired device: none of which are plugged into a strip. Whole-home protection covers what point-of-use can’t.
Cumulative damage is silent
Most surge damage isn’t a single dramatic event. It’s hundreds of small surges over years, slowly degrading electronics until they fail prematurely. The TV that died at year 5 instead of 12. The HVAC board that fried at year 8 instead of 20.
Outage restoration causes its own surges
When power comes back after an outage, the restoration itself often causes a voltage spike. This is one of the most common surge events Oklahoma homes experience, and one most homeowners never realize is happening.
Insurance often doesn't cover the loss
Many homeowners insurance policies exclude or severely limit electronics damage from power surges and lightning. Even when covered, deductibles often exceed individual device value. Prevention is dramatically cheaper than replacement.
One device. Every circuit protected.
A Type 2 whole-home surge protector mounts directly to your electrical panel. When a surge enters your home from the utility lines, the device shunts the excess voltage to ground before it can travel down the branch circuits to your equipment. The whole event happens in nanoseconds. Done right, you’ll never know it happened, but your HVAC, refrigerator, EV charger, electronics, and smart devices will all keep working when your neighbor’s are dead.
We install whole-home surge protection on every kind of OKC metro panel: new builds in Edmond, older homes in Bethany, post-storm replacements in Moore, commercial properties across the metro. We use only brand-name Type 2 units (Eaton, Siemens, Square D, Leviton) with manufacturer warranties: never the cheap aftermarket stuff.
What you get from us: the right surge protector for your specific panel (correctly sized to amperage and brand-matched where appropriate), professional installation with proper grounding verification, layered-protection recommendations including any sub-panel or point-of-use additions, and the kind of clean install that becomes invisible after the panel cover closes.
Three steps. Protected before the next storm.
Most installs are completed in a single visit, with no power interruption to most of the home.
1. Quick Quote
Tell us about your panel: brand if you know it, age of the home, whether you have a sub-panel or detached structure to protect too. We can quote most installs over the phone. If the panel needs assessment first, we can do a quick visit.
2. Schedule the Install
Most installs are scheduled within a week: sometimes same-week if you call after a storm event. We confirm which Type 2 unit is right for your panel and bring everything needed. No prep work on your end.
3. Professional Install
We safely de-energize the panel, install the surge protector on a dedicated breaker, verify the grounding system is up to code (critical for surge protection to work), test the indicator, register the manufacturer warranty, and re-energize.
How Kelvin Electric Pricing Works
No guessing. Here is how pricing works, so you know what to expect before we arrive.
Service Call: $175
If something isn’t working right, we come out and work to fix it, usually within the first hour. The service call is $175, plus any parts needed. If it looks like the job will run past an hour or is more than a quick fix, we stop, explain what we found, and you decide what happens next.

Layered protection, from the meter to the outlet.
The best surge protection uses multiple types working together. We help you decide which layers your home needs.
Type 2 Whole-Home
Panel-Mounted · Primary Defense
Mounts directly to your main electrical panel after the main breaker. Protects every circuit in your home from surges entering through utility lines. The single most important surge protection investment.
Type 1 Service Entrance
Pre-Panel · Maximum Protection
Installed at the meter base or service entrance before the main breaker. Adds an extra layer of protection for properties near transformers, in lightning-prone areas, or with critical equipment. Paired with Type 2 for layered defense.
Sub-Panel Protection
Detached Garages · Shops · Sheds
Type 2 protection for sub-panels in detached structures. Required for full coverage: sub-panels can pick up surges from feeder lines that the main panel’s protection won’t catch. Common for shops and workshops.
Point-of-Use Type 3
TVs · Computers · Smart Devices
The power strips behind sensitive electronics. Last line of defense after Type 2 has handled the bulk of any surge. Recommended for high-value electronics: TVs, computers, gaming consoles, audio equipment.
HVAC-Specific Protection
Most Vulnerable Equipment
Dedicated surge protection at the HVAC disconnect. HVAC systems with modern variable-speed controls are some of the most expensive surge-damage items: dedicated protection makes economic sense for newer high-efficiency systems.
Generator Integration
Standby Generator Systems
Surge protection coordinated with whole-home standby generators. Generator transfer switches and inverter systems benefit from protection at both the utility side and the generator side. Often paired during.
The most expensive surge event is the one you don't see coming.
Most homeowners don’t think about surge protection until after they’ve lost something to a storm. Whole-home protection costs a fraction of that and prevents most of it.
Here’s what unprotected homes consistently lose.
What Goes Wrong
- Refrigerator electronics dead: Modern refrigerators have multiple circuit boards. A surge can kill the main board, ice maker board, and inverter: replacement often exceeds the cost of a new appliance.
- Smart home becomes dumb home: Smart thermostats, smart switches, hub controllers, security panels: all extremely surge-sensitive. One bad event takes out multiple devices at once.
- LED light fixtures burn out: Modern LED fixtures have drivers that fail in surges. Suddenly half the recessed lighting in the house is dead after a storm.
- Insurance denial or limited payout: Many policies exclude surge damage or apply per-device limits below replacement cost. Deductibles often eat the entire claim.
Storms come. You don't think about your electronics.
The best surge protection is invisible. You never see it work because the work happens in nanoseconds at the panel. But you’ll notice what it prevents: HVAC that keeps running, electronics that keep working, smart devices that survive multiple storm seasons, and equipment that reaches its expected lifespan instead of failing prematurely.
Here’s what life looks like after.
Your New Normal
- HVAC keeps running: The most expensive single item in most homes is protected at the source. Control boards, variable-speed drives, smart thermostats: all shielded.
- Electronics last longer: Cumulative surge damage that quietly degraded electronics is gone. TVs, computers, and devices reach their expected lifespans.
- Storm worry, gone: You stop unplugging electronics during storms. The protection is at the panel. Everything is covered.
- Smart home stays smart: Smart thermostats, switches, hubs, and security all protected. One storm doesn't take out your investment.
- EV charger protected: Modern EV charging equipment with sophisticated electronics is protected at the source.
- Indicator visible at a glance: Green LED on the panel cover means you're protected. Red means time for a quick swap. Easy to check after major storms.
Often paired with surge protection.
Panel Upgrades
Surge protection works best on modern panels with proper grounding. Older or undersized panels often get upgraded at the same time: a single visit covers both the panel and surge protection.
Generator Installation
Whole-home generators benefit from coordinated surge protection: both at the utility side and the generator output. Common combined install during storm-season preparation.
EV Charger Installation
Modern Level 2 EV chargers contain sophisticated power electronics that are particularly vulnerable to surges. Whole-home protection often installed together with EV charger installs.

How does Kelvin Electric charge for service calls and quotes?
A service call is $175, plus any parts, and we aim to fix the problem within the first hour. If it looks like the job will run past an hour or is more than a quick fix, we stop, explain what we found, and you decide what happens next. For many smaller jobs we can quote from photos or video at no charge. If we arrive and find more than the photos showed, we stop and walk you through what we missed before any work begins. If we need to quote in person, the visit is $175, and it is credited toward the work if you choose to move forward.
How much does whole-home surge protection cost in Oklahoma City?
The cost depends on the scope of the work, so we quote it before we start. See how Kelvin Electric pricing works on this page, or call (405) 267-7760 for a quote.
If I have power strips, do I still need whole-home surge protection?
Yes. Power strip surge protectors (Type 3) are the last line of defense for sensitive electronics: TVs, computers, gaming consoles. They can't protect your HVAC system, refrigerator, dishwasher, water heater, garage door opener, or hardwired smart devices. Whole-home Type 2 at the panel protects everything in the house from a single point. The recommended approach is layered: whole-home Type 2 at the panel for primary defense, point-of-use Type 3 strips for sensitive electronics as backup.
What's the difference between Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 surge protection?
Type 1 installs at the service entrance (before the main breaker): protects against direct utility-side surges including lightning hitting the grid. Type 2 installs at the main electrical panel (after the breaker): the standard whole-home solution that protects everything connected to the panel. Type 3 are point-of-use units (the power strips behind your TV) that protect specific sensitive devices. For best protection, Type 2 is required at minimum; Type 1 adds extra protection for properties near transformers or in lightning-prone areas; Type 3 catches anything that gets past the first two.
Will surge protection protect against direct lightning strikes?
Partially. Surge protectors are designed to handle the typical lightning-induced surges that travel through power lines (which is most of the damage homes experience from storms). A direct lightning strike to your home is a different magnitude event and would require additional lightning protection like rod systems and grounding. However, the vast majority of storm damage to electronics comes from indirect surges through power lines, which whole-home protection handles effectively.
How long does a surge protector last?
Surge protectors absorb energy with every surge event, slowly using up their capacity. A quality Type 2 unit typically lasts 5-10 years in Oklahoma depending on storm frequency and grid quality. Premium units have LED indicators showing status: green means still protecting, red means time to replace. Many include audible alarms when worn out. We recommend checking the indicator after every major storm. Replacement is a quick swap when the time comes.
Will it work with my old electrical panel?
Most modern panels (Square D, Eaton, Siemens, GE, Cutler-Hammer) accept Type 2 surge protectors readily. Older panels, Federal Pacific (FPE) and Zinsco, should be replaced regardless, both for safety and to support modern surge protection. If your panel is questionable, we can assess it during the consultation and may recommend a panel upgrade first.
How does surge protection work with my generator?
Surge protection and standby generators work together well. The whole-home Type 2 protector mounts at your main panel and protects against surges from both the utility side and the generator side. Some installs add additional protection at the transfer switch for premium coverage. If you're installing a whole-home generator, surge protection is often added at the same time for layered storm protection.
Will my homeowners insurance cover lightning damage?
Coverage varies widely by policy. Many policies exclude or severely limit electronics damage from power surges. Even when covered, deductibles often exceed individual device value, making claims impractical. Check your policy and consider both layers.
Should I get surge protection installed before or after a storm event?
Before, ideally: installed during quiet weather. That said, most homeowners only think about it after losing equipment to a storm. If you've just been through a surge event, get protection in place before the next storm. We schedule storm-aftermath installs quickly because the next event could come any time. Also. If you've experienced a surge, have us check that your equipment survived and your panel is sound before installing the protector.
