Smart Home Wiring in OKC.
Smart switches, Lutron Caseta systems, Philips Hue integration, smart thermostat wiring, Cat6 structured backbone, smart doorbells, and voice assistant setup. The electrical infrastructure that makes a smart home actually work: Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit compatible across the OKC metro.
Smart home is two layers, and most people only think about one.
The devices are the obvious part: switches, bulbs, hubs, doorbells. The wiring underneath is what makes it actually work. Switch boxes without neutrals, no Cat6 backbone, undersized doorbell transformers: the infrastructure breaks smart setups before the devices ever ship. Sound familiar?
Smart switches won't work in your boxes
You bought smart switches, opened the box, and discovered there’s no neutral wire: common in homes built before the 1980s. Most smart switches require it. We run new wire (or recommend Lutron Caseta which doesn’t need it).
You have 5 apps for 5 different brands
One for the thermostat, one for the doorbell, one for the lights, one for the lock, one for the cameras. None of them talk to each other. Voice assistant only half works. A coordinated platform fixes it.
WiFi is your weakest link
Smart devices over WiFi alone are notoriously flaky. The TV streams fine but the smart switch in the back bedroom drops every other week. Cat6 backbone with proper access points fixes the foundation that everything else runs on.
Your doorbell transformer is undersized
Modern smart doorbells (Ring, Nest, Eufy) require 16-24 VAC. Many older homes have 10 VAC transformers. The result: doorbell works half the time, dies in cold weather, video glitches. We upgrade the transformer when needed.
Your thermostat has no C-wire
Smart thermostats (Ecobee, Nest, Honeywell) need constant power: the common (C) wire. Many older HVAC installations don’t include one. We run the C-wire or install an adapter so your smart thermostat actually works reliably.
You want it but don't know where to start
Smart home is overwhelming: Lutron vs Hue vs Caseta, hubs vs hubless, what works with Alexa vs HomeKit. We walk through what you want to control, what your home supports, and recommend the right platform without overselling.
Devices on top. Real wiring underneath.
The reason smart home installs go sideways is almost always the wiring layer. The switches your home was built with weren’t designed for smart devices. The doorbell transformer wasn’t sized for cameras. The thermostat doesn’t have a C-wire. The WiFi can’t carry the load. Once we fix the infrastructure, the devices on top just work. That’s the part we handle, and the part most people skip because it’s invisible.
We’ve wired smart homes across the OKC metro: single-room Lutron Caseta installs in Norman, whole-home Lutron RA3 systems in Nichols Hills, structured-wiring projects in Edmond new builds, smart-switch retrofits in older Bethany homes. We don’t pretend to be a smart-home programmer. We’re the electrical contractor who makes sure the foundation is right so your platform works.
What you get from us: a consultation that’s honest about what your home supports, the right platform recommendation for your goals (not the most expensive option), neutral wires run where needed, Cat6 to rooms that benefit from it, smart switches and dimmers professionally installed, and integration walkthroughs with your Alexa, Google, or HomeKit setup.
Three steps. From confusing to controlled.
Most smart home wiring projects are completed in 1-2 visits, depending on scope. Whole-home systems take longer.
1. Smart Home Quote Visit
We come to your home, see what you want to control (lights, thermostat, doorbell, locks, fans), check existing wiring at switch boxes, identify any neutral or C-wire issues, and discuss platform options. Bring questions about Lutron vs Hue vs Decora Smart, voice assistants, and what works with what.
2. Platform & Quote
You get a clear recommendation on the right platform for your goals (we’ll explain why), a list of devices to purchase (or that we can source), and an all-in quote for the wiring, switches, hub mounting, structured wiring, and integration work.
3. Professional Install
We run any needed neutral wires, install smart switches and dimmers, mount and power the hub, install Cat6 drops where needed, upgrade doorbell transformers, run C-wires for smart thermostats, and walk through voice-assistant integration with you before we leave. Documented setup.

Match the right platform to the right home.
Each platform has tradeoffs. We help you pick what fits your goals, budget, and existing devices.
Lutron Caseta
No Neutral Required · Best Mid-Range
Our most-recommended switch-based system. Doesn’t require neutral wires (works in older homes), wireless to the hub, very reliable, works with Alexa/Google/HomeKit, dimmer-rich. Great starting platform that scales to whole-home.
Lutron RA3
Premium Whole-Home · Custom Programming
The pro tier: whole-home Lutron with custom keypads, scene programming, integration with shades, audio, and security. Programmer support included. Best for large homes and full-feature installs. Expensive but unmatched.
Philips Hue
Smart Bulbs · Color & Accent
Bulb-based system: the bulbs themselves are smart, switches stay standard. Great for color-changing accent lighting, recessed cans with color tuning, and rooms where the bulbs are the focus. Often paired with Lutron switches for the wall.
Leviton Decora Smart
WiFi · Hubless · Needs Neutral
WiFi smart switches that don’t need a hub: works directly with Alexa/Google. Requires neutral wires (we run them where missing). Good budget option for newer homes that already have neutrals at every switch box.
Structured Wiring (Cat6)
Network Backbone
Cat6 ethernet drops to rooms with TVs, offices, gaming areas, and WiFi access points. The reliable backbone that keeps smart devices online: WiFi-only homes get flaky with many devices. Often paired with a network panel and gigabit switch.
Smart Thermostat & Doorbell Wiring
Ecobee · Nest · Ring
C-wire runs for smart thermostats. Doorbell transformer upgrades for Ring, Nest, and Eufy doorbells. The electrical infrastructure for the specific devices most homes want first: done right so they work reliably.
Smart home is supposed to be easier. Bad installs make it harder.
The promise of smart home is convenience: control from anywhere, automate the boring stuff, voice command your house. The reality of badly installed smart home is the opposite: devices that drop offline, switches that don’t work because there’s no neutral, doorbells that die in cold weather, five apps that don’t talk to each other, and a feeling that maybe technology has just made things worse. Done right, it works. Done halfway, it’s frustrating.
Here’s what we see when called to fix or finish someone else’s smart home install.
What Goes Wrong
- Smart switches that won't power on: No neutral wire in the box. The most common failure for people who order switches online without checking their wiring first.
- Hub buried in a closet, devices drop offline: Poor hub placement causes weak signal to switches in distant parts of the home. Devices appear to work then mysteriously fail.
- WiFi crisis with too many smart devices: Consumer WiFi routers struggle with 30+ smart devices. Each one taking up connection slots, dropping packets, causing delays. Cat6 backbone solves it.
- Smart bulbs vs smart switches conflict: Smart bulb behind a smart switch. If anyone turns off the switch, the bulb loses power and goes "dumb." Coordinated planning prevents this.
- Doorbell freezes or fails in cold weather: Undersized doorbell transformer. Ring and Nest specifically need 16-24 VAC continuous: older 10 VAC transformers cause intermittent failures.
- Five apps, no coordination: Devices from different brands that don't integrate. Voice commands work for half of them. Platform selection upfront saves this mess.
Your home just works.
The best smart home is the one you stop thinking about. Lights come on when they should. The thermostat adjusts itself. The doorbell shows you who’s there from your phone. Voice commands work the first time. Schedules and scenes run in the background without intervention. The infrastructure beneath it all is solid, so the devices on top just keep working.
Here’s what daily life looks like after.
Your New Normal
- Single app or voice control: Lights, thermostat, doorbell, locks: all in one platform. Voice commands work the first time, every time.
- Scenes run on schedule: Wake-up routines, away modes, evening lighting, security arming: all automated and reliable.
- Reliable network backbone: Cat6 to key rooms and access points means devices stay online and reachable across the home.
- Smart switches work everywhere: Neutral wires run, switches installed properly, dimmers compatible with LED loads.
- Doorbell and thermostat work reliably: Proper power, no glitches, no cold-weather failures.
- Lower energy bills: Smart automation cuts heating, cooling, and lighting waste. The system pays back over time.
Often paired with smart home wiring.
Indoor Lighting
Smart lighting is most effective when paired with proper indoor fixtures, pendants, chandeliers, sconces, wired with smart-capable switches and dimmers from day one.
Recessed Lighting
Recessed lighting integrated with Lutron Caseta or Philips Hue gives you whole-room dimming and scene control. The single biggest visual impact of smart home in most spaces.
Surge Protection
Smart home devices are surge-sensitive. Whole-home Type 2 surge protection at the panel protects your investment in smart switches, hubs, and integrated devices.

Do I need a neutral wire for smart switches?
Most smart switches require a neutral wire in the switch box, but many older homes (pre-1980s) don't have neutrals at switch locations. We have two solutions: run new wire from the nearest junction to provide neutral (most reliable, what we recommend for permanent setups), or use Lutron Caseta switches which are specifically designed to work without a neutral wire. During the consultation we check your switch boxes and recommend the right approach for your specific home.
What's the difference between Lutron Caseta, Philips Hue, and Leviton Decora Smart?
Lutron Caseta is a wireless dimmer/switch system using its own hub. No neutral wire required, very reliable, well-supported, our default recommendation for switch-based smart lighting. Philips Hue is a smart bulb system: the bulbs themselves are smart, switches stay 'dumb'. Great for accent and color lighting. Leviton Decora Smart works over WiFi without a hub but requires neutral wires in every switch box. Each system has tradeoffs. We help match the right platform to your home and goals during consultation.
Do I need a hub for smart home, or can devices work without one?
Depends on the system. Lutron Caseta requires its Lutron Smart Bridge hub. Philips Hue requires its Bridge for full functionality. Leviton Decora Smart works over WiFi without a hub. Smart thermostats and doorbells work without a hub but integrate better with one. For a serious whole-home smart setup, we recommend a dedicated hub (Lutron, SmartThings, Hubitat, or Apple Home hub) for reliability: WiFi-only setups can be flaky with many devices.
Will my smart home work with Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple HomeKit?
Yes, and this is part of the consultation. Lutron Caseta, Philips Hue, and Leviton Decora Smart all work with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit. We help match your existing voice assistant ecosystem with compatible smart devices, configure the integrations after installation, and walk through voice command setup. Most modern smart home equipment works across all major voice platforms.
Can you install a C-wire for my smart thermostat?
Yes. Smart thermostats (Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell) need constant power via the common (C) wire. Many older HVAC systems don't include one. We run a new C-wire from the HVAC system to the thermostat location (typical), or in some cases install a power-extender kit at the air handler. Quick install, prevents the intermittent disconnect issues many homeowners have with battery-powered smart thermostats.
Why does my smart doorbell keep glitching?
Almost always an undersized doorbell transformer. Modern smart doorbells (Ring, Nest, Eufy) require 16-24 VAC. Many older homes have 10 VAC transformers that worked fine for old chime doorbells but can't power the camera and processor in a smart doorbell. We upgrade the transformer (located near the main panel) to the right voltage, and the doorbell starts working reliably.
Do I really need Cat6 wiring, or is WiFi enough?
For a few smart devices, WiFi alone is fine. For a serious smart home with 20+ devices, cameras, streaming, work-from-home, gaming, and multiple users: Cat6 backbone with proper WiFi access points is what keeps everything responsive. The router in your living room serving the back bedroom over WiFi is where things slow down. Hardwired drops to TVs, offices, gaming setups, and access points fix the foundation.
Smart bulbs vs smart switches, which is better?
Smart switches for general room lighting (you keep the existing fixtures, switch on the wall acts as you'd expect, no one can accidentally "kill" the smart system by flipping the wrong switch). Smart bulbs for accent and color situations (Hue color-changing in a media room, dimmable accent under cabinets). Best smart homes use both: smart switches as the foundation, smart bulbs where color and effects matter. We help spec the right approach per room.
